This month, we feature several recent resources focused on Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), as well as an upcoming SIBO-focused educational series for dietitians and the GI community at large.
What Is SIBO? Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth Symptoms, Explained By Doctors
In a recent article in Women’s Health, doctors and GI experts from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center explain SIBO signs and symptoms and diagnostic and treatment options. The article describes the GI condition as one that “doesn’t get as much attention as fellow GI conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or acid reflux,” but is still a condition that affects millions of people in the U.S.

Three of the world’s leading experts on SIBO, Dr. Mark Pimental and Dr. Ali Rezaie from Cedars-Sinai and Dr. Anthony Hobson from Functional Gut Clinic, join RefluxUK Founder and Medical Director Nick Boyle for an engaging podcast on SIBO. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Functional Dyspepsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
A new study published in the May 2021 edition of The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that there may be an association between Functional Dyspepsia (FD) SIBO. Authors of Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in functional dyspepsia: a systematic review and meta-analysis examined seven related studies and suggested a link may exist, but more appropriately designed studies are required to confirm the connection.
Dietitian Deep Dive: SIBO Workshop Series
In July, leading US-based dietitians Kate Scarlata, MPH, RDN, LDN, and Erin Judge, RDN, LDN, CPT, will provide an educational and informational 3-part series on SIBO. CDI is proud to sponsor this series that will provide up-to-date research and current standards for diagnosis and treatment for this digestive disorder that affects up to 20% of Americans and 40% of all gastrointestinal patients. Dietitians will receive 3 CEUs for the series, and all sessions will be recorded and available via an online portal. While the focus of the series is for dietitians, registration is open to the entire GI community.
