Each month, the CDI team rounds up some of the most prominent #GIcommunity research, news, and trends and highlights how they impact functional GI diagnostics and treatment of patients worldwide.
This month we highlight new European guidelines on breath testing, a story on patient advocacy, upcoming industry events, and more.
New European Guidelines on Hydrogen and Methane Breath Testing
A consensus group between the European Association for Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Nutrition, the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, and the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition released new European guidelines on indications, performance, and clinical impact of hydrogen and methane breath tests in adult and pediatric patients. The goal of the guidelines is to facilitate pan-European harmonization of diagnostic approaches to symptoms and disorders and identify areas of future research needs.
Jordan Haworth, Clinical Physiologist at CDI’s UK partner Functional Gut Diagnostics, took to Twitter to summarize guidelines and recommendations from North America, UK, and Europe. Haworth notes there are “still several disparities in prep, performance, and interpretation.”
Woman's TikTok Story Goes Viral: Supports Patients Advocating for their Health
In a recent series of videos, social content creator Kalista Dwyer documented her journey with extreme bloating and weight gain on TikTok. Multiple ER visits and diagnostic tests led to one doctor treating her to conclude her symptoms were ‘psychosomatic.’ Finally, a holistic doctor tested for food intolerances and ran a GI-MAP test, which provided positive tests for h.pylori, SIBO, candida, and leaky gut, as well as several mild to severe food intolerances. The content creator is now further spreading her story to support other patients to advocate for their health.
